The Border Aussie is a cross between the Border Collie, the world's most intelligent dog breed, and the Australian Shepherd, another highly intelligent herding breed. The result is a brilliantly capable, intensely energetic, and strikingly handsome medium to large dog that is among the most athletic and trainable of all designer breeds. They frequently inherit the Australian Shepherd's merle coat patterns and blue or bi-colored eyes, combined with the Border Collie's athletic, lean build. Their medium-length double coat requires brushing 3–4 times per week to manage shedding and prevent matting. Professional grooming every 8–10 weeks is recommended. Their active lifestyle may mean more frequent bathing. Monthly ear cleaning and nail trims complete the routine.
Health Considerations
Border Aussies can inherit hip dysplasia, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, Collie Eye Anomaly, the MDR1 drug sensitivity mutation, and deafness associated with merle genetics. MDR1 DNA testing is strongly recommended before any medical procedures. Merle-to-merle breeding should be avoided as it significantly increases the risk of blindness and deafness.
